Relationship between Hamlet and Rosencrantz Essay
Are there any acceptable reasons to lie to a friend? This question brings us to the issue of true friendship. In the play Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, the relationship between Hamlet and Horatio as well as the relationship between Hamlet with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are presented. These relationships are portrayed by the occasion on which the friends meet, the method in which Hamletââ¬â¢s friends treat him, and how they act towards him. From these incidents, Horatio proves to be a better friend to Hamlet than either Rosencrantz or Guildenstern. As the play develops, we see that Horatio treats Hamlet with more kindness than both Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. This is exemplified in Horatioââ¬â¢s actions in particular, his first meeting with Hamlet where he informed Hamlet about his fatherââ¬â¢s ghost, then advised him not to follow the ghost, and helped him perform the mousetrap in order to prove Claudiusââ¬â¢ guilt in the murder of King Hamlet. In the beginning, after witnessing the appearance of King Hamletââ¬â¢s ghost, Horatio informs Hamlet of what he saw. ââ¬Å"I think I saw [your father] yesternight.â⬠(I, ii, 188). The fact, that Horatio would tell his friend that he saw the ghost of his dead father every day for the last week proved that Horatio cared for Hamlet. Next, Horatio tried to protect Hamlet by warning him of possible dangers that could arise if he followed his fatherââ¬â¢s ghost. Hamlet: ââ¬Å"It will not speak, then I will follow itâ⬠Horatio: ââ¬Å"Do not, my lordâ⬠¦What if it tempt you toward the flood, my lord,/ Or to the dreadful summit of the cliff.â⬠(I, iv, 62-63, 69-70) From this scene, Horatio is shown to be protecting Hamlet from dangers that could occur, an act that a true friend would carry out. Finally, Horatio helped Hamlet to perform the mousetrap in order to determine if Claudius really killed King Hamlet. Hamlet: ââ¬Å"one scene of it comes near the circumstances which [Hamlet] have told [Horatio] of [his] fatherââ¬â¢s deathâ⬠¦ Observe [Claudius]: if his occulted guilt.â⬠Horatio: ââ¬Å"well, my lord:/ If [Claudius] steal aught the whilst this play is playing,/ And ââ¬Ëscape detecting, [Horatio] will pay the theft.â⬠(III, ii, 75-76,79, 87-88) In this act, Horatio has agreed to team up with Hamlet, and defy his allegiance to the King of Denmark, to see if the Claudius killed King Hamlet. These events are evidence of the true friendship Horatio has with Hamlet. During the play, Hamlet is also introduced to his childhood friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Though they have known each other from a young age, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern prove not to be as true in their friendship to Hamlet as Horatio. This is evidenced by their reason come to Denmark, their first meeting with Hamlet, and the way in which they treated him. When Rosencrantz and Guildenstern arrive in Denmark they are welcomed by Claudius and Gertrude because they were sent for by the King and Queen. ââ¬Å"Welcome, dear Rosencrantz and Guildensternâ⬠¦ The need we have to use you did provoke/ Our hasty sending.â⬠(II, ii, 1, 3-4). Since Rosencrantz and Guildenstern came to Denmark because they were called upon, and did not come on their own free will, this proves that they are not true friends to Hamlet. Next, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern agreed to Claudius and Gertrudeââ¬â¢s proposal to spy on Hamlet. Claudius: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ and to gather, â⬠¦Whether aught to us unknown afflicts him thus,â⬠Guildenstern: ââ¬Å"But we obeyâ⬠(II, ii, 15-18, 29) Since Rosencrantz and Guildenstern agreed to spy on Hamlet, their own friend, this reveals that they are not true friends. Finally, after Hamlet figured out that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were sent to spy on him did they finally confess ââ¬Å"my Lord, we were sent for.â⬠(II, ii, 292). After the truth came out, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern tried to make Hamlet feel better because he felt that he was in a prison living in Denmark because the ghostà told Hamlet of his murder and the adulterous relationship Gertrude had with Claudius. From examining the events surrounding the relationships of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern with Hamlet, it is plain to see that they were not good friends to Hamlet. In comparing Rosencrantz and Guildenstern relationship with Hamlet to Horatioââ¬â¢s relationship with Hamlet, it is clear that Horatio was a better friend. From the initial meeting of the two sets of friends to how they treated the main character, Horatio proved to be kinder to Hamlet throughout. First of all, the fact that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are called to Denmark by the King and Queen and did not come because they wanted to see their friend is very telling of the level of friendship they have with Hamlet. This is unlike Horatio, who goes out and seeks Hamlet in order to tell him about his father. Secondly, Hamlet shows his trust towards Horatio when he indulges his plan to figure out if Claudius killed his father. This is in contrast to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern who agreed to help Claudius figure out what was wrong with Hamlet. Finally, Horatio wanted to protect Hamlet from dangers when he warned him that something negative could possibly happen if he followed the ghost. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern only acted nicely to Hamlet once he figured out that they were sent to spy on him. These events provide evidence that Horatio was a better friend to Hamlet than Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were. In conclusion, from comparing the relationship between Rosencrantz and Guildenstern with Hamlet versus the relationship of Horatio with Hamlet, the evidence viewed, such as his first encounter with Hamlet, the way the main character is treated, and how the friends act with him, showed that Horatio was a true friend to Hamlet. Though, a person may make many friends throughout their lifetime, their actions provide the evidence that is used to determine who are in fact true friends.

Fischer Esterification Conclusion
Barry Allahyar Dr. Dodd CHEM 2122 2010-09-16 Experiment 19: Fischer Esterification, Conclusion The objective in this experiment was to efficiently perform an Fischer esterification of 1-butanol and acetic acid to form water and n-butyl acetate, and to confirm the esterification using IR spectroscopy analysis. It was found that 0. 734 grams of n-butyl acetate was formed with a percent yield of 61%. The product was confirmed using IR spectroscopy and boiling point confirmation.The reaction mechanism for this specific reaction was as follows: First the protonation of a carbonyl oxygen activates the carboxylic acid towards nucleophillic attack by the alcohol yielding a tetrahedral intermediate, in which there are two equivalent hydroxyl groups. One of these hydroxyl groups is eliminated after a proton shift (tautomerism) to give water and the ester. The reaction is a nucleophillic acylsubstitution carried out under acidic conditions of acetic acid and Dowex was also used for supplying pr otons.The alcohol used was 1-butanol which limits the ester to a side butyl chain. After completing the esterification, it was found that 0. 734 grams of n-butyl acetate was formed with a percent yield of 61%. The product was confirmed using IR spectroscopy and boiling point confirmation. The IR spectroscopy graph showed the characteristic Esterââ¬â1735 cm-1 (C=O) strong absorption, and lacked any broad O-H peak at 3300-2500 cm-1 confirming the product as an ester.The boiling point of the final product at 121. à °C closely matched to the theoretical boiling point of n-Butyl acetate, 126 à °C. Although our experiment produced a satisfactory yield of n-butyl acetate, a number of errors could have occurred in this experiment which could have limited the amount of desired product yielded. First, if not enough acid catalyst was used, protonation of the carbonyl group on the carboxylic acid would have been difficult to obtain. Second, if the temperature was too high in heating the m ixture, reflux would not occur, not allowing the solvent to boil and then recondense back into the Dean-Stark trap.

The Raven vs. The First Snowfall During the time period of Romanticism, many great poets emerged. Two of the best poets during this time period included Edgar Allen Poe and James Russell Lowell. Throughout these poetââ¬â¢s lives, they suffered many tragic deaths among their friends and families and decided to write about them. One of Poeââ¬â¢s greatest poems was called The Raven and one of Lowellââ¬â¢s greatest poems was called The First Snowfall. Since these two poems speak about death, they are very similar in somber tone, funeral images, and gothic elements, which all create a mournful mood. One of the ways that The Raven and The First Snowfall are similar is how the somber tone throughout the poems creates a mournful mood. ââ¬Å"Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and wearyâ⬠(1). This quote from The Raven is an example of somber tone because it sets a dark tone to help develop the mournful mood of the poem. ââ¬Å"And thought of the lead en skyâ⬠(26). This specific quote from The First Snowfall is a great example of a somber tone because is speaks about how the sky is a dull, gray color. The somber tone of these two poems is what makes them so similar, but there are more ways that show how they can be even more similar. The second way that The Raven and The First Snowfall are similar is by the funeral images both authors describe in their poems. One of the funeral images used by Edgar Allen Poe in The Raven is the quote: ââ¬Å"And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floorâ⬠(8). In this quote, he is trying to describe the fire as dying to represent his lover who had just died. One of the funeral images used by James Russell Lowell in The First Snowfall is used in the quote: ââ¬Å"The noiseless work of the skyâ⬠(14). What the author is trying to describe here is that everything around him is silent because they are saddened by his daughterââ¬â¢s death. These two funeral im ages used by the authors are another way the poems create a mournful mood and how they are similar. The way that they are similar is that the authors are making images with their words to help the readerââ¬â¢s understand the tragic deaths they had to struggle through. Even though there are a more ways that make these poems similar, there is ne final way that pretty much ties everything together. This way is the use of gothic elements throughout the poems. ââ¬Å"Quoth the Ravenâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (44). This gothic element speaks about the supernatural element of the bird talking. This shows that the narrator is going completely insane over the fact that his lover had died. ââ¬Å"Then with eyes that saw not, I kissed herâ⬠(37). The gothic element that Lowell is trying to describe is that his daughter had just died. What Lowell wants the readerââ¬â¢s to know is that he kissed his daughter for the final time because she had died. The topic of the gothic elements is the final way the poems create a mournful mood and that the elements make the two poems similar because the authors use them to describe the death in their poems. During the Romanticism time period, two poems emerged that were quite similar. They were The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe and The First Snowfall by James Russell Lowell. The three ways that they are similar is through the somber tone, the funeral images, and the gothic elements. There was a huge increase in the benefit as well as the packages as this helped in motivating the employees properly (Mohammed, Gururajan and Hafeez-Baig 2017). Proper training is required to be provided by the employees as this will help the organization and the employees in the or ganization to expertise the new skills and talents that are required as this will help in performing well in the organization in the future as well (Thomson and Jaque 2016). This is the duty of the entire organization to properly implement different strategies that will help in making proper changes as desired by the employees of the entire organization. The respective organization named Cirque Du Soleil could not successfully implement the strategies of the properly providing motivation to the employees in the organization and it did not contribute into social as well as human outcomes of the entire organization. The company needs to implement different other strategies as well as this will help in motivating the employees properly such as by providing them with proper training that will help them acquire different skills that are new in nature (Opp and Saunders 2013). The respective company Cirque Du Soleil was not at all successful in providing the sustainable initiative of providing proper flexible timing to the individuals as these were not working out properly in the organization and the employees were not satisfied and they were demotivated as well in the organization that was reflected through the performance of the employees in the organization as well (Rantisi and Leslie 2015). This was one of the sustainable initiatives that did not work in the respective organization and proper implementation of strategies is essential as this will help in making proper strategies in providing flexible timings to the employees and providing them extra incentives that will help them in performing better in the organization as well (Peronard and Brix 2016). The sustainability initiative that has been depicted previously was relating to the kind of motivation provided to the employees in the organization (Mass 2016). The motivation that has been provided to the employees in the organization was not satisfactory in nature and hence there were issues related to the different frustrations faced by them in the work front. The company has to provide such flexible timings and other incentives that will help the employees as well the entire organization to motivate the staffs and retain the staffs that are essential part of the entire organization as well. The respective organization named Cirque Du Soleil did not implement such strategies that are available in different companies as well that provides proper incentives and other motivational strategies that helps the employees in order to perform better and properly in the organization.
